How to Import Fonts into Adobe Photoshop
A simple, copy‑ready guide for installing and using custom fonts on Windows and macOS.
Step 1 — Download the font
Get a font file (.ttf or .otf) from a trusted source such as:
- Google Fonts
- DaFont
- Font Squirrel
- Adobe Fonts (for Creative Cloud users)
If the font comes zipped, right‑click and choose Extract All before continuing.
Step 2 — Install the font on your computer
Windows
- Right‑click the
.ttfor.otffile and choose Install (or Install for all users). - Or copy the file to
C:\\Windows\\Fonts.
macOS
- Double‑click the font file to open Font Book, then click Install Font.
Once installed, the font becomes available system‑wide.
Step 3 — Restart Photoshop
Close and reopen Photoshop so it reloads the system fonts. Photoshop typically reads the font list only at startup.
Step 4 — Use the font in Photoshop
- Open or create a document.
- Select the Type Tool (T).
- In the Options bar, open the font dropdown and type the font name or scroll to find it.
- Click on the canvas and start typing — your text will use the new font.
Bonus — Adobe Fonts (Creative Cloud)
If you use Creative Cloud, visit Adobe Fonts, click Activate Font for any font you like, and it will sync automatically to Photoshop — no manual install needed.
Troubleshooting tips
- If the font doesn’t appear: make sure Photoshop was restarted after installation.
- Confirm you installed the correct file type (
.ttfor.otf). - If multiple weights (Regular, Bold, Italic) aren’t showing, check the downloaded font package for separate files or check the font family name in the OS font manager.
- For languages like Urdu or Arabic: enable complex script support in Photoshop’s Type preferences (Type > Language Options), or use Middle Eastern/South Asian editions where available.
